Once only a futuristic invention seen in sci-fi films, we are becoming used to the idea of bio-metric security as the norm rather than an advanced privilege. From retina scanning at border control to fingerprint recognition on our smartphones, the world of bio-metrics is playing an integrated role in securing the world in which we live.

The latest application of this innovative technology can be found in VASCO’s DIGIPASS authentication process. Recognising the global availability of cameras on smartphones, the data security company has integrated ‘Selfie Authentication’ as part of its mobile application security offerings.

Though a complicated security measure, the process for end-users is as simple as taking a couple of selfies. Like fingerprint recognition, the software builds a template of the users face, mapping the contours, features and facial data points to create an accurate bio metric ‘fingerprint’. Stored using encryption, the template makes for a highly sophisticated and secure means by which to access DIGIPASS. Once the impression has been stored users simply take a selfie using the software to authenticate their access.

The technology is simple but the security it can offer is extremely refined. With the exception of identical twins (although advanced technology is beginning to recognise inherent behavioural differences in this situation), facial recognition works exceptionally well.

VASCO has tapped into the growing demand of the end-user to provide a hugely secure authentication process to access confidential and sensitive data and married this with the ease of access to existing technology. We can expect to see this technology becoming more common as others emulate the VASCO tradition of supplying cutting edge security solutions.
