Founded in 1828 but with a reputation for innovative and forward thinking, the University of Central Lancashire (UCLan) is a modern institute with global academic partners. As a result faculty members need to work on the move in a safe and effective way. It was one of the driving factors behind UCLan’s Enterprise Mobility Project; a scheme to introduce its mobile workforce with Microsoft Surface Tablets and keep them connected.
With an original deployment of 20 devices the UCLan will have 1500 tablets operational across its faculty members by the end of 2016 in addition to the 7000 Windows PCs.
The scale of the university’s network has always attracted the attention of senior management who understand the need for hand-in-hand security. Operating from a central network, all the PCs have McAfee antivirus software installed and the IT team are experienced in recovering individual users from outbreaks of malware.
However, the introduction of the tablets hasn’t been entirely smooth running.
Malware became a much larger problem when the first tablets were issued. The users had administrative rights, so malware found its way in through downloads and other venues. Mobile users began reporting poor performance and unexplained interruptions.
Gareth Edwards, Technical Lead of Information Services at UCLan was quick to identify the problem and secure a solution; Malwarebytes Endpoint Security.
With a team of only three technicians the importance of eliminating downtime for users and minimising re-imaging automatically was an important element in choosing the system.
Edwards commented:
“The problems – and complaints – just went away. We have far less after-the-fact-remediation, we haven’t had any ransomware incidents, and I haven’t touched Malwarebytes since deployment.”
With an ever-changing landscape of threats, the roll-out of any new scheme of this nature is bound to be a journey of discovery.
