How would you feel if you were stuck at your desk for more than two whole months? Bored? Tired? Uncomfortable?  If you work in a traditional office, you’ll probably know. A survey of 1,250 office workers found that eight in ten (81 percent) spend between four and nine hours a day sitting at their desks – equating to around 67 sedentary days each per year. Almost two thirds (64 percent) thought their working environment had a negative impact on their health.

Fortunately, the world of work is changing. These days, people want to work in more mobile and flexible environments; by that they mean that they want wireless devices, a high quality Wi-Fi network, and a progressive business culture that enables them to flex the time and the place that the work gets done.  Analysts Gartner predict that by 2020, organizations that support ‘choose your own workstyle’ (CYOW) will boost employee retention rates by more than 10 percent.

The worldwide enterprise wireless local area network (WLAN) market grew 6.5 percent year on year in the fourth quarter of 2017, as more businesses go wireless, equip their staff with devices and reap the benefits of healthier, more engaged and more productive employees.

  • Tablets and laptops instead of desktop PCs free people to work from anywhere, on-site or off: a hot desk, with a colleague over coffee, from a meeting room, at a customer’s site or from home in the evening. This improves work-life balance and gives your staff a sense of control.
  • Smartphones give access to key applications when on the move and make it possible to contact employees wherever they are. Workers can be productive in otherwise dead time: waiting for meetings to start, whilst travelling or at the end of the day when the PC has been switched off.
  • Wireless DECT phones mean workers don’t miss calls when they go away from their desk. This means fewer voice-mails and a better service for customers. They can also choose to make important calls away from the bustle of the office, in a separate room for privacy or peace and quiet.
  • Wireless headsets give further freedom to leave the desk and move around, and they mean staff can walk, talk and work hands-free – ideal for conference calls or in technical environments.
  • Wireless speakers turn any room into a conference room and are great for ensuring high quality sound for audioconferencing on the move.

A 2016 study found that organisations that were rated ‘pioneers’ by their employees with respect to mobile device enablement saw a 16 percent boost in productivity, as well as increases in creativity (18 percent), satisfaction (23 percent) and loyalty (21 percent) when compared to companies that ranked poorly with respect to supporting mobile technology.

Employees shouldn’t be stuck at their desks at all, let alone for more than two months of the year. The wireless workplace frees workers from their desks and enables them make the most of their time, their energy and their creativity.
